Why I Love Baseball

It’s finally that time of year again! Spring training has begun and spring training games start this week! As a huge Red Sox fan, this is a favorite time of year for me. From the time the last pitch is thrown, I start looking forward to when I can watch the next one. I do enjoy football and other sports, but nothing gets me as much as baseball, so the off season is always kind of boring for me, and it’s even harder when your team didn’t make it through the post season! But now baseball is back, and baseball fans like myself rejoice! So, in honor of the new season, I thought I’d start off the blog with an entry on why baseball is so awesome.

#5 The time of year

Everyone loves spring and summer. It’s hard not to! Extra daylight, the smell of freshly cut grass, cookouts … and baseball! I definitely enjoy winter (especially when we get a lot of snow like we have this year) but the time of year when baseball is played always brings back good memories for me of my childhood.

#4 Duration of season/frequency of games

I understand of course that many sports like football simply could not play as many games, or as often as baseball is played. Many football players probably need a week to recover from the hits they took during the previous game! So I can totally respect that, but it sure is nice to know that you can look forward to watching your sport almost every night. It’s like having your favorite TV show on every night, with a completely new episode each night, for 6-7 months!

#3 Going to the ball park

I’ve only been to one major league baseball game, although I’ve been to a few more minor league games, but I still say there’s nothing like the ballpark atmosphere. From the ballpark hotdogs to an ice-cold Coke … it’s just a joy! And as a Red Sox fan, there are the memories of belting out a line of “Sweet Caroline” or booing the Yankees in unison with your fellow fanatics – there’s just nothing like it. At the same time, most baseball fans aren’t quite as crazy as some of the fans you see in some other sports. Don’t get me wrong – I can totally appreciate that level of fanaticism, but the ballpark atmosphere just fits my personality better.

#2 Amazing Plays

I know other sports have some awesome plays too, but stuff like this has to give you goosebumps.  There are some plays that are considerably more impressive than this in my humble opinion, but this is one of the most historic:

#1 The Boston Red Sox!

There’s just nothing like cheering your own team on, especially when they win.  And of course there’s always a little fun in giving your rivals a hard time.

These aren’t the only reasons why – but they are 5 of the top reasons I love watching baseball.  And no matter who you cheer for, I hope you enjoy the upcoming seasons.  Unless you’re a Yankees fan.
